As you can see, today I went to Ikea - first time ever. It turned into a four hour ordeal which was absolutely ridiculous. But at one point I finally found that warehouse where you pick up the parts and I just wanted to do pick up/home delivery, because let's be real, I'm not gonna bring a couch onto a water taxi and get it from Brooklyn to Wall St to the UES. I get there and this Jewish girl starts waiting behind me. We are told we have to go back up to the showroom - which in Ikea was miles away and then we needed to do a bunch of crap. She started talking to me and this girl just turned 21, is a born New Yorker, and buying furniture for her new place in Brooklyn - she said she was moving out of her parents home.
Me: Oh is this your first time living away from home?
Her: No, my husband and I just got a new apartment.
Me: You're married?
Her: Yeah I got married last September, moved to Israel for a bit, got pregnant, and had a baby two months ago.
Me: Shutup! You look fabulous!
Her: Thanks! I don't feel it.
This chick is 21, married, and has a little girl named Esther. THAT'S INSANE. Her husband is a student at Columbia and they were living with her parents until they could find a place post move from Israel and finally her husband couldn't stand her parents anymore and told her she needed to buy furniture ASAP. She's my age, holy shnikies. We bonded for a good chunk of time.
There were a lot of like Hassidic Jewish people there. On my water taxi ride over I was clearly the shiksa in a sea of black and curly hair tendrils. There's a part of Brooklyn that is like purely Hassidic Jews and I've been over there and I'm absolutely fascinated by how they dress.
